Biohacking for Beginners: Why the Future of Wellness Isn't About Perfection

6 min read

"Your future self is being built by the choices you make today."

Over the past year or so, one word has seemed to pop up everywhere. Biohacking.

It's all over Instagram, podcasts and mentioned at every wellness event. Some people make it sound like the secret to living until you're 120, while others dismiss it as another expensive wellness trend.

I'll be honest... when I first heard the word, I pictured billionaires sitting in ice baths, wearing futuristic gadgets and spending thousands on supplements. It felt completely out of reach & something I wasn't really interested in to be honest....But the more I started seeing things, learning, reading and attending talks, the more I realised something. Biohacking isn't about becoming superhuman.

It's about becoming more intentional. It's about making small, evidence-informed choices that support your body and mind, not just today, but for years to come.

As someone who's navigated IBS, a burst appendix, late-diagnosed ADHD, motherhood, sobriety and now having baby number three, I've become fascinated by one question: How can I look after the body that's looked after me? How can I live better for longer, for my kids?

Not because I'm afraid of ageing. But because I want to feel healthy enough to enjoy the life I'm building.

To run around with my children. To grow my businesses. To age with strength, energy and purpose.

If you're curious about biohacking but don't know where to begin, this is for you (a beginners guide if you like).

So... What Actually Is Biohacking?

Despite how complicated the word sounds, biohacking is actually quite simple.

At its heart, biohacking means making intentional lifestyle changes to help your body and brain function at their best for longer!

Some biohackers use advanced technology, continuous glucose monitors or expensive equipment. But for most of us? Biohacking starts with the basics...

Sleep. Movement. Nutrition. Hydration. Stress management. Community. Looking after your gut. Understanding your hormones. Listening to your body instead of constantly fighting against it. In many ways, biohacking is simply becoming curious about your own health.

Let's Challenge a Myth

One of the biggest misconceptions about biohacking is that it's only for wealthy entrepreneurs with endless free time.

I couldn't disagree more.

A mum who prioritises sleep where she can. Who fuels herself with enough protein. Who drinks enough water. Who goes for a walk outside. Who protects her mental health. Who builds meaningful friendships...She's biohacking too, It just doesn't always come with fancy gadgets and a huge price tag (becuase lets face it who can afford a price tag in this economy?!)

Five Simple Ways to Start Biohacking Today

1. Protect Your Sleep Like It's an Investment

I'll admit, this one makes me laugh slightly as I write it because by the time this blog goes live, I'll likely have a newborn keeping me awake!

But here's the thing... Sleep isn't a luxury.

It's one of the most powerful tools we have for supporting our health.

Research has consistently shown that quality sleep supports memory, immune function, hormone regulation, mood and recovery. Scientists are also learning more about sleep's role in long-term brain health and healthy ageing.

Of course, if you're pregnant, postpartum or parenting young children, uninterrupted sleep may not be realistic. That's okay. Biohacking isn't about perfection. It's about doing the best you can with the season you're in.

Even small habits can help:

  • Getting outside for morning daylight.

  • Reducing bright screens before bed where possible.

  • Creating a calming evening routine that you can stick to.

  • Prioritising rest without guilt. (this is the hardest one for me....)

Sometimes the most powerful biohacking tool is simply giving yourself permission to slow down.

2. Eat Enough Protein

For years I thought wellness meant eating less.

Now I know it often means nourishing yourself better.

Protein plays an important role in maintaining muscle, supporting recovery, balancing blood sugar and helping you feel fuller for longer. As women age, preserving muscle becomes increasingly important for strength, mobility and overall health.

When life gets busy, I know I don't always manage to prepare the perfect meal.

That's one of the reasons I personally use the Arbonne FeelFit Protein Shake.

Not because it's a miracle product but because it's an easy way for me to make sure I'm nourishing my body on the days life feels chaotic. It's become one of those simple habits that supports the bigger picture.

3. Don't Underestimate Hydration

energy and hydration is key to biohacking with a bag of freshly picked apples too

If someone asked me for the most underrated wellness habit, I'd probably say drinking enough water. Hydration affects almost every system in the body.

Energy.

Concentration.

Digestion.

Exercise performance.

Temperature regulation.

Even our skin.

When I'm particularly busy, exercising or eventually navigating life postpartum again, I know I'll continue reaching for electrolyte support alongside water.

Personally, I love Arbonne's Hydration range because it's an easy way to encourage me to drink more whilst replenishing electrolytes.

Again... It's not about needing a product. It's about creating habits you'll actually stick to.

4. Why Everyone Is Talking About NAD+

This has become one of my favourite areas to learn about.

NAD+ is a naturally occurring coenzyme peptide found in every cell of our body. It's involved in turning food into energy and supporting many of the processes our cells rely on to function.

I like to think of it as the Duracell Bunny of our cells.... recharging each cell in our body to give us energy at cellular level for better sleep, balanced hormones, less agining and all that jazz.

Researchers have become increasingly interested in NAD+ because levels naturally decline as we age. Whilst scientists are still exploring exactly what this means for healthy ageing, it's one of the most exciting areas of longevity research today.

That doesn't mean we've found the "fountain of youth."...Far from it but it does mean we're learning more about how our cells work and how lifestyle factors may influence long-term health.

It's one of the reasons I personally enjoy using Arbonne's Cellular Energy supplement an NAD+ Skin Booster Serum (I personally call this "botox in a bottle")... This is a premium, all natural, botanical but science-backed longevity bundle I honestly cannot stop raving about!

I don't expect them to work magic. I see them as part of a much bigger picture that includes good nutrition, movement, sleep and looking after my mental wellbeing.

No supplement can replace healthy habits but the right products can complement them.

5. Your Gut Is More Powerful Than You Think

If you've followed me for a while, you'll know gut health has become a huge interest of mine.

Partly because I've lived with IBS, partly because of my burst appendix & partly because the more I learn, the more fascinating it becomes.

Scientists now recognise a close connection between our gut and our brain, often referred to as the gut-brain axis. Research suggests the trillions of microbes living in our digestive system may influence digestion, immunity, mood and many other aspects of health.

It's an area that's still evolving, but it's one of the reasons I believe looking after our gut deserves far more attention than it often gets.

For me, that means focusing on fibre, protein, hydration, colourful foods and sustainable habits rather than chasing quick fixes.

I'm also incredibly excited to begin using Arbonne's GLP-1 Nutrition Support (a natural alternative to the jabs) after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Although I haven't personally started it yet, we've already seen some amazing feedback from clients using it alongside GLP-1 medications, helping them prioritise protein, fibre and key nutrients during their wellness journey.

It's another reminder that biohacking doesn't have to be complicated, sometimes it's simply about supporting your body with what it genuinely needs.

The Biggest Thing Biohacking Has Taught Me

This journey has completely changed how I think about health.

I no longer ask,

"How can I lose weight?"

Instead, I ask,

"How can I support my body today?"

That shift changes everything because suddenly your choices come from care.

Not punishment but from curiosity.

Not guilt but from wanting long-term health.

Not quick fixes just healthier habits, one small step at a time.

And I think that's a much kinder way to live.

A Little Note Before You Go (disclaimer)

I'm not a doctor, nutritionist or biohacking specialist.

I'm simply a woman who's become deeply interested in the science of longevity, women's wellness and the incredible things our bodies are capable of.

Everything I share here is based on reputable research, my own experiences and the habits and products I've personally chosen to incorporate into my life.

My hope isn't to tell you what to do.

It's to encourage curiosity.

To open conversations.

And to remind you that looking after yourself doesn't have to be overwhelming.

If you're ever unsure about supplements or lifestyle changes, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding or if you have existing medical conditions, always speak to your healthcare professional first.

P.S. A Little Something to Think About

If you could choose just one habit to improve your health over the next 12 months, what would it be?

Not ten...Not twenty...Just one.

Because the healthiest women I know aren't the ones trying to do everything.

They're the ones who consistently do the simple things well & maybe that's where biohacking really begins.

With love,

Jess x
